Interview with Danika Lorèn

What drew you to this concert concept / how did it come together with Brad?

I have had the pleasure of working on many projects with Brad, and I have a huge appreciation for his vision! He has a beautiful way of telling a story with music without dumbing things down or over explaining; he knows how to let the music do the talking. And he is so in tune with new music that is happening now. When he shared his concept and repertoire for this project it was an easy yes for me. We share a mentor, Barbara Hannigan, and her work has inspired both of us to tackle challenging repertoire and to push our limits as artists; this program really shows that.

Tell us your thoughts on love songs, and why this concert and its program is going to captivating:

This program shows sides of love that we don’t see in other repertoire; it is an extremely classic theme done in a completely modern way, showing the depth and grittiness of love as
well as the sweetness we often associate with love songs. There are elements of classical, bluegrass, grunge and theatre that come together in this show, and it is so refreshing! I am so excited to be stretching beyond genre and fach with this program. My journey as a singer began as a soprano, but I am keen to explore my vocal abilities outside of any category. I want to do it all! I want to erase any false limitations that the label of “soprano” might bring with it. This programme is the perfect vehicle for that exploration.

Tell us about the different roles you’ll have in this show (composer, performer, singer):

I’m so excited to be performing some of my own compositions! There is an extremely personal journey through the theme of love that I get to have with this concert, and having my own works in the show makes it even more personal. Outside of the performing elements I’ll be creating a new custom garment as I prepare for the concert; this is always a really important part of preparing for a concert for me. And just to spice it up I will add percussionist to my duties as well! Hard to say whether I am a glutton for punishment or a show off; I guess it is probably a bit of both! I can own that.
