Music and Dance from Canada and Finland with the Lapland Chamber Orchestra

Soundstreams’ 35th season opens with a celebration of kindred northern identities. Proudly holding the title of Europe’s northernmost professional orchestra, The Lapland Chamber Orchestra makes their first ever visit to Toronto this fall. Lead by National Arts Centre guest conductor John Storgårds, they perform music by iconic composers from Canada and Finland, past and present, including Jean Sibelius, Harry Somers, and Claude Vivier.

Fresh off a successful run starring alongside Jessica Chastain at the Toronto International Film Festival, powerhouse choreographer Michael Greyeyes premieres a new dance piece. Set to Claude Vivier’s Zipangu- which translates as Land of Gold- it is an exploration of the impact gold has had on northern communities. Seen most recently in Signal Theatre’s production of Bearing, Saskatchewan born Ceinwen Gobert takes center stage as the sole dancer in this piece. The celebration begins with the world premiere of Soundstreams’ 35thAnniversary Fanfare by Canadian Anna Pidgorna.

Before playing Koerner Hall, The Lapland Chamber Orchestra and Zipangu will be part of the National Arts Centre’s Ideas of North Festival, which explores common threads between Canada and Scandinavia.
