The Book of Mountains and Seas Premiere

Book of Mountains and Seas was originally scheduled to appear in Toronto as part of the Soundstreams 2020/21 season before the pandemic hit, and features music and libretto by Huang Ruo, direction and production design by Basil Twist, musical direction by Paul Hillier, and a vocal ensemble featuring Ars Nova Copenhagen.

As a commissioner of the work, we were delighted to attend its world premiere at the Royal Danish Opera House. Founding Artistic Director Lawrence Cherney was present, as well as a Canadian percussion contingent made up of Ryan Scott and Michael Murphy, who were part of the ensemble.

Below you’ll find some interviews and behind the scenes footage of dress rehearsals. Please enjoy!

Book of Mountains and Seas was commissioned by Beth Morrison Projects, Are Nova Copenhagen, Moss Arts Center/Virginia Tech, Soundstreams, Koorbiennale, and Hong Kong New Vision Festival, and Linda & Stuart Nelson.
